Most consumers can spend $10 per month or less for access to the full Google Photos service. If you want unlimited full resolution back up and sync with Google Photos, a paid Google Membership is required. Google does provide unlimited photo and video storage at full resolution for Google Pixel smartphone owners - with one exception being the budget-friendly Pixel 3a smartphone. The video cap is more limiting as many popular smartphones sold over the past few years support 4K video that will be downgraded on the free Google Photos tier. Most popular smartphones won’t exceed the photo resolution cap for now, but photos shot on dedicated cameras might.

Photos are saved with up to 16 megapixel resolution, and videos are saved with up to 1080p resolution. Google’s service places a cap on the quality of images and videos saved using the free tier. You can back up and sync unlimited photos and videos with Google Photos without paying anything, but there is a catch.
The price of Google Photos is one of its most compelling features: free. Google Photos also has a more robust web app than iCloud Photos, but the service isn’t as easy to use on desktop computers. Google’s service works with the built-in Photos app on Android phones, and iPhone users can download the Google Photos app. Google Photos is a comparable photo library service with a few key differences.
Apple’s Photos app can intelligently recommend photos and videos for sharing with family and friends, but there’s no option to automatically share one photo library between two or more users. ICloud Photos doesn’t offer an unlimited storage option for extremely large libraries, but the two terabyte plan has plenty of room for my library of 30,000 photos and videos to grow.Īside from no Android support, iCloud Photos also lacks great family support for sharing libraries.
